“Greyscale” is a term used in color science, printing, photography, and computer displays. It describes all shades of grey in the color spectrum between black and white. Winemaking, like many things in life, is not an absolute recipe (i.e., black and white). Instead each year’s blending process involves a series of adjustments, reacting to the unique qualities of the fruit that year. Our motto is “Wine is neither white nor black, it is always shades of grey!”

Greyscale Wines LLC is a family-run winery founded in 2009 by Jean and Larry Rowe. We specialize in Bordeaux-style wines. Our Cuvée Blanc is a new world take on a Bordeaux Blanc that blends barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc with Marsanne rather than Semillon, which produces a rich, complex wine with many layers of flavor. Our Napa Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, which produces a classic California Cabernet that is similar to a left-bank Bordeaux Rouge.

Our vineyards are planted on steep, windswept hillsides where French immigrants first grew wine grapes nearly 100 years ago. Our mission is to create wines that reveal the complex nuances of the vineyards that inspire them – cool climate, ocean-influenced, mountain vineyards.By keeping our production small, we can give every vine, fermentation bin and barrel the attention it deserves. We hope you enjoy the results.

We are a small family owned winery established in 2002. Our family roots in Sonoma County date back to 1907 when our grandfather came to America from Genoa, Italy and settled here with his two brothers. Our estate vineyards are planted in the rich red soil of the rolling hillsides that Dry Creek appellation is known for. Winemaker Jeff Cohn is well known for producing small lots of hand crafted zinfandel, drawing out the unmistakable character of the fruit from the terroir.

Our winery facility located at the base of our vineyards will be completed this year. The winery is an intimate venue that harkens back to the old world where you can taste wine in the cave amongst the barrels or picnic in the shade by the creek.

Simple Math is about being in the right place at the right time, employing the Golden Rule, deconstructing hogwash. It’s about putting a complicated life into folders, streamlining business, poking status quo in the eye, doing everything sustainably. It’s about breaking the wine talk down to one important thing - yum or yuck! For most, listening to the numbers and science can be boring. I’ll save you the hot air. And just like when you were forced to eat your broccoli and told, “Go ahead; it won’t kill you,” the same applies to wine.

I hope you enjoy what I’ve come up with, even if it seems a little scarce. Every release thus far has turned a head or two but, hey, isn’t Nature really responsible? If you’re a seasoned oenophile, look at the fruit. Compare apples to apples with the wines you already know, from this vineyard or that, and you come out the winner with more left in your wallet. Simple math, really.
